The Foreign Ministry announced a memorandum of understanding was signed on Egypt’s joining of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) as a “dialogue partner” in the Uzbek capital of Tashkent on Wednesday.

The approval of Egypt’s membership as a “dialogue partner” preceded a summit of heads of state and governments which are members of the organisation, slated for Friday in Samarkand city in Uzbekistan, the ministry added in a press release.

The ministry said that Deputy Foreign Minister for African Affairs Ambassador Hamdi Loza and the SCO’s Secretary General Zhang Ming co-signed the memorandum, representing Egypt and the organisation respectively.

Loza said during talks with Ming that the move is an important step toward the promotion of ties with the organisation’s member countries in the different domains, along with supporting regional security and stability.

For his part, Ming welcomed Egypt’s accession to the organisation as a “dialogue partner”, saying he is looking forward to more fruitful co-operation in the coming phase.
