CAIRO – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration, and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty on Tuesday stressed the importance of securing the Egyptian diplomatic mission in the Netherlands during a phone call with his Dutch counterpart Caspar Veldkamp, stressing the Netherlands’ responsibility under international law to protect the mission.
Abdelatty expressed deep concern over a recent attack on the Egyptian embassy in The Hague, underlining that the Dutch authorities must prevent a recurrence and noting that Egypt could take measures if necessary.
Veldkamp conveyed regret over the incident and said that security authorities plan to strengthen protection at the embassy in line with international obligations.
The two ministers also discussed developments in the Middle East, focusing on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Abdelatty outlined Egypt’s ongoing efforts to achieve a ceasefire, facilitate unrestricted humanitarian aid, and secure the release of Palestinian prisoners.
He further noted Hamas’ acceptance of most points in US envoy Steve Witkoff’s proposal and stressing the pressing need for Israeli agreement.
Highlighting his visit to the Rafah border crossing with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa, Abdelatty stressed the need to pressure Israel to open crossings connecting Israel and Gaza.
He also urged the Dutch government to exercise its influence within the European Union to help alleviate the humanitarian crisis.
He also noted Egypt’s preparations to host an international conference on early recovery and reconstruction in Gaza once a ceasefire is reached.
Veldkamp praised Egypt’s constructive role in facilitating a ceasefire, ensuring aid delivery, and supporting the Palestinian people.
