Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and UN Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza Sigrid Kaag on Monday stressed the necessity of increasing humanitarian aid to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and providing the necessary protection for international relief workers in the enclave.

Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Ahmed Abu Zeid said the meeting took up the UN Coordinator’s efforts to implement the tasks assigned to her under UN Security Council Resolution No. 2720 to monitor and accelerate the process of bringing humanitarian aid into the Palestinian enclave.

In this regard, Shoukry reaffirmed the legal and humanitarian responsibility of international parties to ensure the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution No. 2720 and relevant UN resolutions on Gaza.

The foreign minister underscored the imperative for addressing the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza, through achieving an immediate and lasting ceasefire and allowing the full and safe entry of assistance into the enclave.

On her part, the UN coordinator emphasized the keenness to continue coordination and consultation with the Egyptian side to implement her tasks, lauding Egypt’s pivotal role to ease the crisis in Gaza and contain its humanitarian repercussions.

Kaag commended the existing cooperation between the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC), Egyptian civil society organizations and UN relief agencies to deliver aid to Gaza.
