“We are following, monitoring and evaluating Qatar’s commitment to the agreement. If we find that there is commitment, we will forget the past, and relations will be back to normal,”
Foreign Minister Sameh Shourki said that Egypt is keen on strong relations between the Egyptian and Turkish peoples but the political situation and stances of some Turkish politicians were negative. However, they do not affect relations between the two peoples, FM Shoukri said.
The foreign minister made the remarks during a meeting of the House of Deputies (parliament) Foreign Relations Committee.
During the meeting, FM Shoukri said that if there is a change in Turkish policy, approach and goals to be in line with the Egyptian policies, this can be a foundation for restoring normal conditions. “Words are never enough. Words should be accompanied by deeds,” the foreign minister said.
On Qatar’s commitment to al-Ula agreement, the foreign minister said that there should be commitment to the agreement from Qatar. “We are following, monitoring and evaluating Qatar’s commitment to the agreement. If we find that there is commitment, we will forget the past, and relations will be back to normal,” the minister said during the meeting.
FM Shoukri also said that Ethiopia has not shown so far any real political will on the issue of its dam. However, Egypt is still seeking to reach an agreement that is fair to all parties, the foreign minister said, adding that there is readiness for all developments and possibilities and that there are partners whom Egypt trusts and are seeking to bring viewpoints closer for a fair agreement.
On the issue of human rights, the foreign minister said that Egypt is paying due attention to this issue and that there is a roadmap that would allow citizens to enjoy all their rights.
The minister also said that human rights are enshrined in the Egyptian constitution and the law, but some organizations assess the human rights file from a narrow perspective.
