CAIRO – Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry asserted Egypt’s rejection of the Israeli military operation in Rafah and any ideas or measures to displace the Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.
Shoukry’s remarks were made while receiving a delegation representing the US House of Representatives, led by Representative Adam Smith on Monday.
Smith is visiting Egypt as part of a regional tour.
Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Ahmed Abu Zeid said that Shoukry welcomed the delegation and underscored the necessity of promoting strategic partnership between the two countries to achieve peace and security amid the current circumstances and turmoil in international and regional conditions.
The foreign minister said Egypt is always seeking to boost relations with congressmen and underscored the important and vital role they play to serve Egyptian-US interests.
He highlighted the importance of maintaining efforts to enhance political, economic, trade and military relations.
The talks tackled the situation in the Gaza Strip.
Shoukry said Egypt is seeing the only solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is the immediate ceasefire and the adoption of clear steps toward a genuine and serious peace process that would lead to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in a certain and short period.
Shoukry as well underlined the vital role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in receiving and distributing humanitarian assistance in Gaza.
The spokesman said the foreign minister talked about tireless efforts exerted by Egypt to make it easy for the entry of relief aid and removing obstacles placed by Israel, in addition to Egyptian mediation efforts to reach a deal to implement a humanitarian truce in order to stop the bloodshed in the Palestinian lands and allow for focusing efforts on chances of reaching a complete and everlasting ceasefire.
