Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry reiterated Egypt’s rejection of any attempts to force Palestinians out of the Gaza Strip.
Shoukry made the remarks during his meeting on Thursday with US Democratic Senators Chris Van Hollen and Jeff Merkley, two members of the US Senate Committees on Appropriations and Foreign Relations, said Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Ahmed Abu Zeid.
The two US senators’ visit comes as part of a regional tour.
The top Egyptian diplomat said the US can exert pressure on Israel to stop the forced displacement of Gaza residents, adding that reaching a ceasefire and allowing sufficient access of humanitarian aid into the besieged-enclave were the practical solution that prevents the displacement scenario.
Shoukry stated Egypt looks forward to fostering its strategic ties with the US in different fields, underlining the importance of stepping up consultation and coordination between the two countries to address the current regional and international challenges, the spokesman added.
The foreign minister briefed the two US Senators on Egypt’s position on the latest developments in the Gaza Strip, while stressing the significance of giving priority to reaching an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire in a way that effectively contributes to dealing with the humanitarian catastrophe in the enclave and pushing forward the political path aimed at finding a just and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue based on the two-state solution.
On their part, the two US Senators commended the efforts exerted by Egypt to deal with the political and humanitarian situation of the crisis.
The two congressmen reviewed their efforts inside the US Congress to contain the worsening crisis in Gaza and its serious humanitarian fallout.
Van Hollen and Merkley expressed appreciation of the key role played by Egypt in releasing US hostages in Gaza.
