CAIRO – Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty has reiterated Egypt’s support for Syria and the legitimate aspirations of its people, calling on all Syrian parties in this decisive stage to prioritize Syria’s national interest and support the country’s stability.
During the foreign minister’s participation in an expanded Arab ministerial meeting on Syria in Riyadh – in the presence of the Arab League (AL) secretary general and the secretary general of the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) – Abdelatty reviewed the Egyptian stand in this regard and accentuated the necessity of preserving the unity and integrity of Syrian territories, respecting Syria’s sovereignty and supporting its national institutions to improve their abilities to carry out their roles in serving the Syrian people.
The meeting was then followed by a meeting of Arab foreign ministers with the Turkish foreign minister.
Official Spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ambassador Tamim Khallaf said, the Egyptian foreign minister also called for adopting a comprehensive political process “with pure Syrian will” – with the participation of all components of Syrian society and without excluding any political, social force or party to ensure the success of the transitional process and to adopt a comprehensive approach with participation of all Syrian national forces; in line with Security Council Resolution 2254.
Abdelatty also stressed the importance of embarking upon an all-out political process that would encompass all societal, religious, sectarian and ethnic diversity within Syria, with a view to rendering Syria a source of regional stability and setting the scene for the various national political forces to have a role in managing the transitional phase and rebuilding Syria and its national institutions.
He pointed out to the importance of cooperation of all regional and international parties in combating terrorism for its being a serious menace to regional countries.
Abdelatty also condemned Israel’s incursion into the buffer zone with Syria and its occupation of Syrian territories, pointing out to Egypt’s full rejection of Israel’s violation of the 1974 Agreement on Disengagement between Syria and Israel, which run counter to international laws.
The Egyptian foreign minister underlined the necessity of Israeli withdrawal from all occupied Syrian territories and respect for the Disengagement Agreement, expressing Egypt’s condemnation of the systematic Israeli raids that targeted the Syrian army’s infrastructure and military capabilities.
