CAIRO – Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has asserted the ongoing war in Gaza, which witnessed an official hint of the use of nuclear weapons against the Palestinian people, is forcing all peace-loving nations to work for restoring and boosting regional stability in the Middle East.
The foreign minister’s remarks came in Egypt’s statement he had delivered before the High-level Segment of the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva on Monday.
Egypt tackled serious security challenges facing our world today.
The international multi-faceted system is facing a serious challenge, which required the provision of necessary political determination to help all powers shoulder responsibilities.
Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Ahmed Abu Zeid said that Shoukry underscored the important role of the conference at the international security level. However, the stalemate of the conference on disarmament over the past years was caused by the insistence of some countries on rejecting the achievement of any genuine progress in nuclear disarmament.
Shoukry said Egypt underscored – as part of its historical contribution to establishing the international disarmament system – the significance of restoring the central and pressing issues of disarmament in the international action agenda.
Nuclear states must abide by their legal commitments and implement the global Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), he stressed.
Speaking about the war in Gaza, Shoukry reiterated Egypt’s condemnation of all attacks on the civilians and confirmed the necessity of immediately stopping the Israeli aggression on the Palestinian people and the necessity of reaching a permanent ceasefire and ensuring the safe and sustainable delivery of humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza.
He denounced the double standard policy adopted by some while addressing the value of life of human being.
Shoukry also reiterated Egypt’s complete rejection of any forced displacement attempts against the Palestinian people.
The international community must shoulder its responsibility toward the protection of the Palestinian people and their inalienable right to the establishment of the Palestinian state along the occupied lands in 1967 with al-Quds as its capital within the two-state solution, added the foreign minister.
Shoukry said the success of the conference in approving an action programme this year is a necessary step on the right way to restore the transparency of the international multi-faceted system, which, he added is boosting international peace and security, that is considered an important UN goal.
