Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Ati asserted the need to preserve Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity, support its national institutions, and reject the creation of parallel entities.
This assertion was made during a phone call on Sunday with Annette Weber, the European Union’s Special Representative for the Horn of Africa.
Abdel-Aati underscored the importance of launching an inclusive, Sudanese-led political process to bring the conflict to an end, alongside reaching a humanitarian truce as a first step towards a sustainable ceasefire. Such a truce, he noted, would facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid and help alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people. He further condemned all violations against civilians, describing them as flagrant breaches of international humanitarian law, and stressed the need to ensure the protection of civilians and vital infrastructure.
The phone call also reviewed preparations for the Berlin Ministerial Conference on Sudan, scheduled for April 15, as well as broader developments in the Horn of Africa and efforts to promote regional security, stability, and development.
The two sides stressed the importance of enhancing coordination and co-operation in light of mounting regional challenges, reaffirming their support for national institutions across the Horn of Africa.
Abdel-Aati also reiterated Egypt’s commitment to supporting Somalia, particularly through capacity-building efforts aimed at boosting security and stability and addressing terrorism and extremism. He highlighted the need to secure sufficient and sustainable funding for the African Union mission in Somalia to enable it to effectively carry out its mandate.
