Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukri, President-Designate of the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP27) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), chaired on Wednesday the first meeting of the Friends of COP27 group which was held virtually.
The Friends of COP27 group serves as an informal consultative framework, including a high-level expert on climate change, former presidents of climate conferences and ministers of environment, and heads of several concerned organisations, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said.
COP27, due in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Shaeikh next month, offers an opportunity for the international parties to affirm their solidarity, unity and commitment to confronting climate change, the spokesman said.
Shoukri also listened to the participants’ views on ways to deal with climate change challenges at the international level.
In the meantime, the meeting reviewed means to help achieve goals sought by Egypt during its presidency of COP27 by moving from pledges to actual implementation on the ground.
Participants in the meeting expressed their confidence in Egypt’s ability to steer the conference to successful conclusion and produce the cherished results to enhance international climate action, Spokesman Abu Zeid said.
