Chairman of the National Food Safety Authority (NFSA), Dr Tareq el-Houby, announced the resumption of fish exports to EU countries after a three-year hiatus.

This came after NFSA met all EU requirements and standards.

El-Houby said this major achievement was achieved after NFSA received the file at the end of 2021.

After that, we worked hard to develop an integrated regulatory system over the fish product trading chain.

“The European Commission’s previous inspection report contained several recommendations and observations. NFSA had therefore taken it upon itself to solve them in order to integrate the fishery control regime,” el-Houby added.

He highlighted that the European Commission conducted a visit from May 28 to June 6, 2024, to assess Egypt’s system of circulation and control of marine fishery products, noting that the results of the visit were very positive.

El-Houby announced that Egypt had received an official letter from the European Commission stating that marine exports would be resumed to enter EU countries.

The sector’s exports are capable of reaching targets, which gives a strong boost to the growth of food industry exports, el-Houby stressed.

In the end, he confirmed the importance of this success in achieving food security, sustaining marine fisheries resources, and maintaining fish stocks and industry.
