CAIRO – Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Sherif Farouk affirmed that cooperation with the European Union comes as part of the state’s commitment to developing the system of commodity circulation and supply chains, ensuring their quality, and opening new horizons for Egyptian exports. He stressed that the EU is a key partner for Egypt in matters of food security.

This came during Farouk’s meeting with Ambassador Angelina Eichhorst, the Head of the EU Delegation to Cairo, at the ministry’s headquarters to discuss ways of enhancing joint cooperation between Egypt and the EU in the fields of food security and internal trade.

For her part, Ambassador Eichhorst expressed appreciation for the existing cooperation with the Ministry of Supply, underlining the EU’s keenness to support Egypt’s role as a regional hub and a key link between different markets. She stressed the Union’s commitment to supporting Egypt’s efforts to develop supply chains in a way that directly benefits the Egyptian consumer and enhances the competitiveness of Egyptian exports globally.

During the meeting, Farouk reviewed the ministry’s main areas of work, foremost among them the plan to secure strategic commodities, the food subsidy system, and the ongoing unified card project, describing it as a qualitative leap that would boost the efficiency of the subsidy system.

He also pointed out that the ministry’s plan for the coming phase focuses on projects to develop internal trade and advance digital transformation, thereby strengthening the foundations of food security and contributing to achieving sustainable economic development goals.

At the close of the meeting, both sides agreed to continue coordination and consultation to further strengthen fruitful cooperation between Egypt and the EU in areas of mutual priority.

The meeting was attended by Ambassador Eichhorst and Eva Staminova, the Program Officer for Agriculture and Health.
