CAIRO – Egyptian Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad discussed during a meeting Monday with Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Patricia Espinosa preparations for Egypt’s hosting of the UN Climate Change Conference 2022 (UNFCCC COP 27), set for Sharm el-Sheikh in November.
In statements Monday, the minister said Egypt is racing against time to press ahead with holding a number of meetings with all relevant parties pertaining to preparations for the COP27.
Egypt is looking to the upcoming gathering from a different perspective, not only concerting its outcome, but rather to the great leap the event is expected to achieve for the climate action domain in Egypt, the minister said.
Fouad said Egypt has started to reap the fruits of strenuous climate action drives, referring to incorporating the climate change perspective into the various ministries’ development strategies, along with encouraging climate change-oriented private sector investments.
According to the minister, Egypt is mulling the launch of a number of initiatives, with the aim of striking a balance between mitigating the impact of climate change and adaptations on the national, regional and international levels.
