Environment Minister Yasmin Fouad discussed on Tuesday with Portuguese Ambassador in Cairo Manuela Franco ways of boosting co-operation in preserving the marine life and oceans.
Fouad had received an invitation to take part in the 2022 UN Ocean Conference, set to be held in Portugal on June 27.
Fouad, in this regard, stressed the importance of such conference given the increasing importance of water and its connection to various aspects of human activities, including seas and oceans, and the direct relationship between the preservation and sustainability of the marine environment and effects of climate change.
The minister said the UN COP27 is a great opportunity for co-operation between Egypt and Portugal to prepare topics related to oceans and marine life.
She expressed her aspiration to participate in the Blue Talks organised by Portugal on a number of topics, including marine pollution, management of natural reserves, fishing and sustainability of the quality of fishermen’s life, encouraging ocean economies, and enhancing scientific and technological knowledge.
She stressed the importance of these talks in raising awareness and the need to focus on the human dimension, pointing to what Egypt is currently implementing through the Eco Egypt campaign, which aims to promote natural reserves and eco-tourism.
Meanwhile, Franco noted that her country is awaiting wide participation from the Egyptian government in the UN ocean conference to show its experience.
