Remarkable progress has been made in environment matters over the last seven years, the environment minister said Tuesday.
Minister of Environment Yasmeen Fouad told the parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee that interest in environment affairs has increased over the past years.
She referred to the cabinet’s issuance of environmental sustainability criteria in co-operation with the ministries of finance and planning.
The ministry of finance has also issued green bonds worth $750 million, the first in the Middle East and Africa, the minister said.
In addition, the state has embarked on a scheme to replacing petrol-driven vehicles with gas-fuelled ones to overcome air pollution, the minister added.
Fouad said her ministry is working hard to curb all forms of pollution.
After a $7 billion plan was introduced, twelve to oil companies no longer dispose of waste in the Gulf of Suez, she said, adding that work ongoing to cut plastic waste, but this will take longer as 3,375 factories producing single-use shopping bags and change will come only gradually.
Fouad spoke of Egypt’s strong presence on the international environment scene and its role in concluding several ecological agreements.
