Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli on Sunday emphasised the prime importance of maintaining secure strategic reserves of petroleum products, as well as ensuring sufficient funding to complete ongoing energy projects, underscoring that energy security is a cornerstone of national security.
His remarks came during a high-level meeting to review the preparedness of the energy sector amid the ongoing military escalation in the region. Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Essmat, Minister of Finance Ahmed Kouchouk, and Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi attended the meeting.
Madbouli said the meeting aimed to assess the energy sector’s readiness in light of rapid developments since Saturday morning and to ensure the effectiveness of precautionary measures undertaken by the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources to secure domestic supplies of natural gas and petroleum products. He stressed the need to guarantee that all national requirements are met without disruption.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining safe strategic stockpiles of petroleum products for all uses while ensuring adequate funding for ongoing energy projects, highlighting that safeguarding energy supplies is integral to protecting Egypt’s broader national security.
Minister Badawi outlined the preemptive measures implemented by the ministry in coordination with relevant state institutions to meet domestic needs and enhance readiness for any emerging developments. These measures include diversifying natural gas supply sources alongside continued domestic production, contracting liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes from multiple suppliers, concluding long-term agreements with international companies, and establishing integrated infrastructure to receive LNG imports.
Badawi confirmed full readiness to secure the gas quantities required for the electricity sector, sufficient to meet both citizens’ consumption and the needs of productive sectors. He also highlighted efforts to increase the availability of petroleum products while maintaining safe strategic reserves of gasoline, diesel, butane, and other essential products.
The meeting reflects the government’s proactive approach to mitigating potential impacts from regional instability and ensuring uninterrupted energy supply to the domestic market.
