Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker said Egypt continues to exert efforts to act as a transit corridor for the clear energy that the African continent enjoys.

During a meeting he held on Wednesday with African Development Bank (AfDB) Vice-President for Power, Energy, Climate and Green Growth, Dr Kevin Kariuki, and his accompanying delegation, Shaker affirmed Egypt’s support to the African countries’ efforts to get access to clean energy via renewable resources.

During the meeting, both sides discussed means of boosting co-operation between the electricity sector and the AfDB in the fields of electricity, new and renewable energy and areas of energy efficiency and green hydrogen, given Egypt’s preparations to organize the 2022 UN Climate Change Conference (COP 27) in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el Sheikh in November.

Shaker said the Egyptian electricity sector has succeeded in completing many projects and programs in co-operation with the bank.

He added that the sector attaches importance to diversifying sources of electrical energy generation, noting that it is sought to boost the renewable energy’s contribution to the energy mix by 42 per cent in 2035.

Meanwhile, the AfDB vice-president hailed the great expertise owned by the Egyptian electricity and renewable energy sector in all areas.

He asserted the bank’s readiness to provide all means of support to Egypt in its preparation for hosting COP 27.
