CAIRO – The House of Representatives gave on Sunday its final approval on a bill submitted by the government on amending some provisions of Law No 97/1959 on passports.
The lower council’s approval came after a comprehensive review of the bill by a joint committee comprising the defense and national security committee and constitutional and legislative affairs committee.
The amendments come in compliance with international conventions regulating travel documents.
Under the amendments, the maximum fee stipulated in Article 8 of Law No. 97 of 1959 concerning passports will be raised from LE250 to LE1,000 Egyptian pounds, the committee said.
The amendments are prompted by the current economic conditions, including the increased exchange rate of the US dollar against the Egyptian pound, which caused a higher cost of passport materials that are imported from abroad, it added.
