The Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), which operates under the authority of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), has officially confirmed the continued accreditation of the Egyptian National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) at Level A status.
The favorable assessment by GANHRI was based on demonstrable efforts by the Egyptian government and the Council itself to enhance its independence and strengthen human rights protections across the country, which were thoroughly detailed in a report presented by the NCHR’s representative to the Alliance.
The basis for maintaining the Level A accreditation rests on concrete measures implemented by Egypt to support the human rights environment and the NCHR’s operational independence.
Specifically, GANHRI cited the government’s move to reject a draft Criminal Procedures Law, signaling a commitment to reinforcing robust safeguards for protecting these fundamental rights within the judicial system.
Furthermore, Egypt has undertaken the construction of reform and rehabilitation centers designed to adhere to stringent, humane international standards, aiming to make these facilities comparable to the world’s best detention environments.
Key to the NCHR’s status, a draft law has been submitted aimed at guaranteeing significantly greater independence for the Council, addressing a core requirement for Level A standing.
The NCHR’s active role was also highlighted, specifically noting its successful intervention in securing the release of a number of prisoners on compassionate humanitarian grounds.
