Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization, during his official visit to London.
Abdelatty expressed appreciation for the cooperation with the IMO, noting Dominguez’s visits to Egypt during his first year in office. He emphasized Egypt’s commitment to strengthening collaboration, especially as a member of the IMO Council. He highlighted Egypt’s role in hosting the IMO’s regional office, which supports capacity-building programs for maritime workers across the region. These efforts aim to improve skills, share expertise, and keep pace with rapid developments in shipping, ports, and logistics, contributing to sustainable development and maritime safety.
The minister also underlined Egypt’s vital role in global shipping through the Suez Canal, pointing to ongoing development projects such as expanding dual lanes to boost efficiency. He noted the economic opportunities offered by the Suez Canal Economic Zone, designed to transform the canal into a hub for trade, industry, and maritime services.
Abdelatty warned of the impact of regional tensions on international shipping and supply chains, stressing risks to trade and energy flows. Dominguez praised Egypt’s progress in logistics and port services, recognizing its central role in supporting global trade and affirming the importance of continued cooperation.
