Egyptian disaster relief teams have been deployed to offer support in Sudan as the crisis is escalating and fighting rocks the African country.
Immediately after the outbreak of the Sudanese crisis, the Egyptian Red Crescent headed to the borders with Sudan in coordination with the Egyptian Red Crescent branch in Aswan, southern Egypt.
The Red Crescent teams set up a humanitarian relief service centre at the Arqin border crossing, where they provide relief and emergency services.
The services include medicines, light meals, psychological support and telephone and online means of communication.
The teams also provide first aid services to those who cross the border and arrange means of transportation that enable them to reach their destinations of choice.
The Egyptian Red Crescent also set up a focal point at the Egyptian Red Crescent branch in Aswan to provide the necessary services to border crossers upon arrival in Aswan.
Communication is taking place around the clock between the Egyptian Red Crescent and many of the partners concerned, including the Sudanese Red Crescent, the office of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Sudan, and the International Committee of the Red Cross in Egypt and Sudan. This is in order to coordinate efforts and discuss ways to provide humanitarian services in this crisis.
Ways of communicating with the Sudanese and Egyptian Red Crescents have also been made publicly available to help overcome obstacles for Sudanese citizens or other nationalities in Sudan.
The Egyptian Red Crescent is also coordinating with the Egyptian Embassy in Sudan in an attempt to alleviate the suffering and provide the necessary services to those affected by the crisis.
The Egyptian Red Crescent is also currently discussing with its counterparts from the international movement what the current situation might lead to in the event of continued unrest and how to activate safe passages.
It is also communicating with the Red Cross Societies in South Sudan and Chad in the event that there are some Egyptian students stuck in those countries.
The Egyptian Red Crescent is following up the situation through its central operations room, which works around the clock to receive communications from all parties that need assistance and to deal with these communications in a manner that ensures the provision of an effective humanitarian service.
