Minister of Industry and Transport and Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development Kamel el Wazir asserted that opening a RORO (roll-on/roll-off) maritime shipping route between Egypt and Italy contributes to opening markets for Egyptian exports of agricultural goods, especially fresh crops, in Italy and Europe.
The move comes within the framework of directives of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi to transform Egypt into a regional hub for global transport, logistics and trade, he said.
Wazir’s remarks were made during a ceremony held by the Italian side at the Italian Port of Trieste on the occasion of opening the ro-ro route and the arrival of its first trip.
Wazir said that the sustainable operation of this route between Egypt and Italy is the result of joint efforts to operate a green shipping corridor between Egypt and Italy to transport goods using refrigerated and dry trucks.
He said that this maritime corridor is a sustainable and fixed bridge of friendship between both countries.
He pointed out that the project will contribute to boosting Egypt’s capabilities making it a central logistics zone between Europe and Africa in addition to benefiting from the European expertise in the field of land transport.
Wazir lauded cooperation between both sides in implementing a number of projects in the fields of smart road, subway, railways and maritime transport, asserting that Egypt is looking forward to further enhancing cooperation with Italy in the transport and industrial sectors.
