Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population Dr Khaled Abdel Ghaffar met on Tuesday a European Union delegation, led by Mr Stefano Sannino, Director-General for the Middle East and North Africa. The meeting took place in line with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s directives to provide comprehensive humanitarian aid and healthcare support to the Palestinian people.
Discussions during the meeting centred on means to expand co-operation to sustain Egypt’s humanitarian relief efforts for the inhabitants of Gaza amid the region’s ongoing crisis, the Health Ministry Spokesman, Dr Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, said.
The two sides also reviewed the latest progress in Egypt’s reconstruction plan for Gaza.
Minister Abdel Ghaffar said that the Egyptian hospitals are ready to receive wounded Palestinians. During the meeting, the EU delegation was briefed on the preparedness of emergency departments, intensive care units, and inpatient facilities to accommodate the injured. The minister stressed the availability of specialised medical teams to deliver comprehensive healthcare services to patients from the Gaza Strip.
Talks also covered mechanisms for offering psychological support, particularly to children who have endured trauma during the Israeli aggression on the Strip. In this context, Minister Abdel Ghaffarre affirmed Egypt’s unwavering commitment to leveraging its expertise in support of the Palestinian people, ensuring their healthcare and humanitarian needs are met, in line with Egypt’s longstanding role in advocating for the Palestinian cause.
The minister invited the EU delegation to visit medical facilities in North Sinai and neighbouring governorates to observe firsthand efforts in providing healthcare to Palestinians receiving treatment in Egyptian hospitals.
For his part, the EU official commended Egypt’s humanitarian initiatives to support the Palestinian people, highlighting Cairo’s pivotal and exemplary role in addressing the current crisis. Stefano Sannino also voiced a strong interest in enhancing co-operation between Egypt and the European Union to support the reconstruction of Gaza and meet the urgent healthcare and humanitarian needs of the Palestinian people amid ongoing challenges.
