The Arab Republic of Egypt has welcomed the announcement by United States President Donald Trump regarding the agreement to suspend military operations in the region for a period of two weeks.

It also described the step as a positive and significant development towards de-escalation and the containment of tensions, while safeguarding regional and global security and stability.

In a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry on Wednesday, Egypt affirmed that the suspension of military operations, alongside the response from the Iranian side, represents a critical opportunity to advance diplomatic efforts and initiate constructive dialogue.

The ministry reiterated Egypt’s consistent position advocating for the peaceful resolution of disputes and the avoidance of military escalation, with the aim of ending the conflict, reducing tensions, and alleviating the humanitarian and economic burdens on the peoples of the region and beyond.

The statement underscored the importance of building on this development through full adherence to the cessation of military operations and the preservation of freedom of international navigation.

Egypt also reaffirmed its support for all initiatives aimed at achieving peace and stability, highlighting its continued coordination with Pakistan and Türkiye, as well as other regional and international partners, to advance these objectives, the statement read.

Egypt further stressed the necessity of respecting the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of the Gulf Co-operation Council states and the sisterly Kingdom of Jordan, reiterating its categorical rejection of any actions that undermine their security or stability.

It emphasised that any outcomes of forthcoming negotiations must take into account the legitimate security concerns of these states.

In a related context, during a telephone call held in the early hours of Wednesday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Badr Abdel-Aati, expressed his appreciation to the United States Special Envoy to the Middle East, Mr Steve Witkoff, for this important step, noting that it provides an opportunity to launch serious negotiations between the United States and Iran.

For his part, the US envoy commended Egypt’s constructive role, in coordination with Pakistan and regional partners, in supporting ceasefire efforts and facilitating dialogue aimed at achieving regional and international stability.
