Egypt has welcomed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the US and Iran, describing the move as an important step toward reducing tensions and restoring stability in the Middle East.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Egyptian Presidency said the agreement signed by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian could help prevent further escalation and open the door to a new phase of regional calm and confidence-building.
Egypt praised President Trump’s commitment to resolving disputes through peaceful means and commended his efforts to reach a consensus text for the MoU.
It also welcomed Iran’s positive engagement in the process and expressed appreciation for the coordination with regional partners that contributed to the outcome.
The statement highlighted the role played by Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey in facilitating the understanding, describing their efforts as instrumental in reaching the agreement.
Cairo voiced hope that all parties would fully implement the MoU, both in letter and spirit, paving the way for a final and sustainable agreement that addresses the concerns of all sides and supports long-term regional security.
Egypt said the development, linked to ending the conflict with Iran, could create a more favourable environment for addressing other regional crises, particularly the Palestinian issue, which it described as the core conflict in the Middle East.
The Presidency reiterated its appreciation for President Trump’s efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza.
The statement also expressed hope that the agreement would contribute to ending Israeli attacks on Lebanon, securing Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanese territory, and preserving Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Egypt further voiced support for the upcoming technical talks between Washington and Tehran, expressing hope that they would lead to broader and more durable understandings that strengthen regional stability and reduce tensions.
Cairo reaffirmed its readiness to support the negotiations and reiterated its commitment to peaceful conflict resolution in line with international law and the UN Charter.
