Egypt welcomed a decision by the UN Security Council (UNSC) to adopt a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during the month of Ramadan Monday.
The resolution came for the first time since the onset of the crisis and following a repeated failure to reach a resolution calling for an everlasting ceasefire.
In a statement by the Foreign Ministry, Egypt said the resolution is considered a “first, important and necessary step” to stop bloodshed and ensure the delivery of humanitarian assistance into the Gaza Strip, although it lacks balance because of limited time frame and its obligations.
Egypt asserted it is necessary to immediately implement the ceasefire to deal with all crisis elements, adding it will continue its constant efforts with international and regional parties to contain the crisis in the coastal enclave as soon as possible.
Fourteen countries voted in favor of the resolution, while the United States abstained from voting.
The resolution stipulates “an immediate ceasefire for humanitarian reasons during the month of Ramadan,” demands the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and stresses the urgent need to protect civilians and deliver humanitarian aid throughout the Gaza Strip. (MENA)
