Minister of Transport, Lieutenant General Engineer Kamel El-Wazir too part on Sunday in the Port Infrastructure and Maritime Innovation Conference organised by the US Embassy’s Commercial Office in Cairo, alongside senior American officials and industry leaders.
The event reflects the deep-rooted Egypt–US relations, which extend beyond trade and investment to a strategic partnership supporting growth, stability and development, El‑Wazir said.
He noted that both countries share a vision to enhance the efficiency, sustainability and security of global supply chains, with private sector involvement in localising technology, developing maritime services and boosting port competitiveness.
The minister outlined Egypt’s success in forging strategic partnerships with leading global port operators and shipping lines, strengthening the ability of Egyptian ports to attract transit trade and raise their global competitiveness.
He highlighted Egypt’s integrated plan to develop eight international logistics corridors linking Red Sea and Mediterranean ports with dry ports, industrial zones and rail networks, including the Arish–Taba and Ain Sokhna–Alexandria routes, which support Egypt’s readiness to join the India–Middle East–Europe Corridor.
El‑Wazir also detailed plans to expand Egypt’s commercial ports to 19 by 2030, increase their area to 100 million sqm, add 70 km of berths, and grow the national fleet to 40 ships with a transport capacity of 30 million tonnes annually. He stressed Egypt’s commitment to green shipping, clean energy and international environmental standards.
The US side, represented by Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce Mark Mitchell, emphasised the importance of investing in secure, efficient and technologically advanced port infrastructure, noting vast opportunities for American companies to bring expertise and investment to Egypt, strengthening both bilateral cooperation and the resilience of global supply chains.
This conference underscored Egypt’s ambition to become a regional logistics hub and the shared interest of Cairo and Washington in advancing sustainable maritime and transport solutions.
