Abdel-Aati warns of ‘catastrophic repercussions’ if escalation continues

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aati has stressed that prioritising political and diplomatic solutions remains the only effective safeguard against the Middle East sliding into a widening cycle of conflict and instability, warning of “catastrophic repercussions” for regional and international peace if the current escalation is not contained.

During a phone call on Friday with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Abdel-Aati reaffirmed Cairo’s firm rejection and condemnation of any attacks that target the security and sovereignty of regional partners.

He stressed that such violations against sisterly and friendly nations — including Gulf states, Jordan, Iraq, Turkey, and Azerbaijan — are unacceptable and cannot be justified under any circumstances.

Regional security, int’l navigation

Minister Abdel-Aati underscored the urgent need to intensify regional and international coordination to preserve stability and safeguard the security of international navigation routes.

The two top diplomats reviewed the strategic partnership between Egypt and the United States and exchanged views on the growing scope of regional tensions. Both sides highlighted the importance of de-escalation and diplomatic engagement to prevent further deterioration of the security situation.

Gaza crisis

Addressing developments in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, Abdel-Aati referred to the inaugural meeting of the Peace Council held in Washington on February 19. He reiterated Egypt’s commitment to advancing the second phase of the US presidential peace initiative.

The minister also affirmed Cairo’s full support for the National Committee for the Management of the Gaza Strip and efforts to deploy an international stabilisation force tasked with ensuring adherence to a ceasefire agreement.

He stressed the importance of facilitating the uninterrupted flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza, alongside launching early recovery and reconstruction programmes across the Strip.

Water security

On water security, Abdel-Aati conveyed Egypt’s appreciation for the efforts of Donald Trump in supporting regional and international peace initiatives.

He reiterated that the Nile River represents “an existential lifeline for the Egyptian people,” particularly in light of the country’s growing water scarcity challenges.

The minister reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to international law and constructive co-operation with countries of the Nile Basin, while firmly rejecting any unilateral measures concerning ‘the transboundary river’ that could undermine Egypt’s water security.

Horn of Africa and Somalia’s sovereignty

During the phone call, Abdel-Aati also reiterated Egypt’s firm position on preserving the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both Eritrea and Somalia.

He explicitly rejected any attempts to recognise the self-declared “Somaliland,” warning that such moves would constitute a violation of international law and pose a threat to stability in the Horn of Africa and the strategically vital Red Sea corridor.

Sudan and Lebanon

Regarding the crisis in Sudan, the foreign minister stressed the need to protect Sudan’s national institutions and territorial integrity. He also commended US diplomatic efforts within the International Quartet framework aimed at supporting stability in the country.

As for Lebanon, Abdel-Aati reiterated Egypt’s rejection of any violations of Lebanese sovereignty and called for the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, aiming to maintain stability along Lebanon’s southern border.

He also stressed the importance of strengthening the Lebanese state’s authority across all its territories.

US praise for Egypt’s regional role

For his part, Rubio praised the strong strategic partnership between Cairo and Washington and expressed appreciation for Egypt’s pivotal role in promoting regional stability.

He also commended Egypt’s humanitarian efforts in facilitating the evacuation of foreign nationals during recent crises.

The two top diplomats concluded their call by agreeing to maintain close consultation and coordination on key regional and international issues, while reinforcing joint efforts aimed at supporting peace and global security.
