The Egyptian Mint Authority announced the completion of technical preparations to upgrade certain coins currently in circulation, while confirming that all current denominations will remain in use without cancellation.
Head of the Authority Gamal Hussein stated that the development plan includes maintaining the existing coin denominations—particularly the one-pound coin—while reissuing them with updated technical specifications to enhance quality.
This includes revising the metal composition of some coins, especially the pound, using more cost-effective materials that balance face value with production costs and curb illegal melting and trade.
The plan also introduces a new two-pound coin, aimed at strengthening the structure of currency denominations and facilitating daily transactions.
Hussein emphasised that existing denominations—including the quarter-pound, half-pound, and one-pound coins—will continue to circulate as essential components of Egypt’s small-change system.
He added that efforts are underway to increase the supply of coins across markets to ensure adequate availability, particularly in high-density areas with frequent daily transactions.
He noted that these measures are part of a comprehensive vision to upgrade the subsidiary coin system, improve operational efficiency, and ensure a sustainable and regular supply to the market.
