Egypt will assume the presidency of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) starting February 1 for a month.

According to a press statement issued on Saturday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs, Egypt’s chairmanship comes at a critical time, as Africa faces mounting security, political and development challenges.

Complex regional and international circumstances require strengthened cooperation and coordinated efforts to address these issues, the statement said.

During its tenure, the Egyptian presidency will address a wide range of pressing political, security, developmental and environmental matters.

The presidency aims to enhance the effectiveness of the Peace and Security Council as the principal body responsible for maintaining stability and security across Africa.

This will be achieved through a comprehensive approach focused on strengthening the continent’s peace, security and governance structures, supporting conflict resolution, promoting stability and advancing the African Union’s Agenda 2063 for development.
