Speaking on behalf of President Abdel Fattah El‑Sisi, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has said that the Julius Nyerere Hydroelectric Dam and Power Plant represents the fulfilment of a major Tanzanian dream and stands as a testament to the determination of the Tanzanian people and Egypt’s technical expertise.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony on Saturday in Tanzania, Madbouly conveyed President Sisi’s greetings and best wishes to President Samia Suluhu Hassan and the Tanzanian people, congratulating them on the landmark achievement and wishing Tanzania continued prosperity and progress.
He emphasised that the project demonstrates what the two countries can achieve through brotherhood, understanding and cooperation, reaffirming Egypt’s readiness to continue partnerships with Tanzania and other African nations to build a stronger present and a promising future.
Madbouly noted that the project was completed in 42 months at a cost of approximately $2.9 billion, with a generating capacity of 2,115 megawatts. He thanked the Egyptian consortium of Arab Contractors and Elsewedy Electric for constructing one of Africa’s three largest dams, showcasing the ability of Egyptian companies to deliver major international projects.
The prime minister affirmed Egypt’s eagerness to build on the project’s success to achieve a qualitative expansion in bilateral cooperation, especially in trade and investment. He called for stronger private‑sector collaboration in construction, roads, maritime transport and ports, logistics, agriculture and land reclamation, fishing and aquaculture, pharmaceuticals and medical supplies, electricity and energy, and other areas of mutual interest, building on President El‑Sisi’s visit to Dar es Salaam on 18 July 2016.
Madbouly also praised Tanzania’s balanced positions on regional issues of mutual concern and expressed Egypt’s hope that Tanzania will continue to play a constructive role in promoting understanding and cooperation among Nile Basin countries.
