Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdel-Aati held separate phone calls late on Saturday with Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, which discussed regional developments and boost coordination on issues of mutual interest.
The calls were part of ongoing consultations between Egypt, Qatar and Saudi Arabia on bilateral relations and key regional issues.
During his call with the Qatari foreign minister, Abdel-Aati and Sheikh Mohammed reviewed the latest developments in negotiations between the US and Iran.
They stressed the importance of building on the current diplomatic momentum following the signing of the memorandum of understanding.
They also underscored the need to implement the agreed commitments in a manner that helps de-escalate tensions, enhances regional security and stability, and safeguards freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law.
The two ministers also touched on the situation in Lebanon, and welcomed the framework agreement reached under US mediation.
They emphasised the importance of ensuring the agreement’s full implementation to reinforce Lebanon’s security, stability and sovereignty, while supporting the Lebanese state and its national institutions.
They further reiterated the need for a full Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory and an end to Israeli attacks.
In his phone talks with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, Abdel-Aati reaffirmed the deep-rooted fraternal and strategic partnership between Egypt and Saudi Arabia, with both sides expressing their commitment to expanding bilateral co-operation across various fields.
The two chief diplomats also exchanged views on regional developments, reasserting the importance of capitalising on the momentum created by the US-Iran memorandum of understanding to consolidate calm and reduce regional tensions.
They stressed that the security of the Arab Gulf states is an integral part of Arab national security, while underscoring the need to guarantee freedom of navigation in accordance with international law.
The discussions also covered developments in Lebanon, the Palestinian issue and the situation in the Red Sea. The two ministers agreed to maintain close consultation and coordination in the coming period to support regional security and stability and strengthen joint Arab action in addressing current challenges.
