Palestinians and Israelis agreed on Thursday to an Egyptian-brokered “mutual and spontaneous” ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip as of Friday May 21 at 2:00 am (Palestine time), the state news agency MENA reported.
Cairo will send two security delegations to Tel Aviv and the Palestinian territories to follow up on implementation procedures and agree on subsequent measures that will maintain the stability of the situation permanently, the agency added.
Fighting between Israel and Hamas escalated over the past week and a half, killing at least 232 people in the Gaza Strip and 12 in Israel, in one of the deadliest exchanges in years.
