Egypt’s Health Minister Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar met on Tuesday with officials from the Russian company Rosatom at the Pryorov National Medical Research Centre for Trauma and Orthopedic Surgery, affiliated with the Russian Ministry of Health, to discuss enhancing co-operation in nuclear medicine and advanced healthcare technologies.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of his participation in the Healthy Living Forum in Moscow.

This meeting builds on existing collaboration between Egypt and Rosatom across strategic sectors, including healthcare, universal health coverage, and the pharmaceutical industry, while exploring new opportunities in diagnostic and therapeutic innovations.

Health Ministry Spokesman Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar explained that discussions focused on establishing specialised centres for nuclear medicine and radiotherapy in Egypt, including the potential creation of a regional centre for tumour diagnosis and treatment.

This would strengthen the country’s capacity to address non-communicable diseases, particularly cancer.

The meeting also considered technology transfer and local production of radioisotopes and radiopharmaceuticals to meet national needs and reinforce Egypt’s position as a regional hub for nuclear medicine in Africa and the Middle East.

Further discussions addressed expanding oncology and advanced diagnostic services within the second phase of the comprehensive health insurance system, as well as employing artificial intelligence, digital health, and modern medical technologies to improve service quality, support early disease detection, and enhance telemedicine.

Both sides stressed the importance of training and human capacity development through fellowships and academic exchanges between Egyptian medical institutions and Russian universities, particularly in radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, and medical physics.
