Cairo, Khartoum unite against unilateral actions on Nile River
Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration, and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdel-Aati, reaffirmed Egypt’s unwavering support for the government and people of Sudan, pointing out that his third visit to Port Sudan within a single year is a testament to the deep-rooted and historic bonds uniting the two brotherly countries, and a clear message of solidarity from the Egyptian leadership and people to Sudan.
During a meeting with Sudanese Prime Minister Kamel Idris, Minister Abdel-Aati expressed Egypt’s firm support for the steps taken by the Sudanese government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Idris, to restore peace, stability, and national cohesion.
He also reiterated Egypt’s steadfast commitment to Sudan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the vital role of its national institutions, particularly the Sudanese Armed Forces, said the Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ambassador Tamim Khallaf.
He added that the minister underscored Egypt’s active engagement in all regional and international efforts aimed at securing a ceasefire, facilitating a humanitarian truce, and alleviating the suffering of the Sudanese people.
In this context, Minister Abdel-Aati highlighted Egypt’s positive involvement in efforts to end the siege on El Fasher and promote de-escalation, Khallaf noted.
The discussions with Prime Minister Idris further addressed ways to strengthen bilateral co-operation, particularly in trade and economic development. Minister Abdel-Aati welcomed the planned convening of the Egyptian-Sudanese Business Forum and the Joint Trade Committee in Cairo, viewing them as vital platforms for deepening economic ties.
He also reviewed Egypt’s measures to support Sudanese citizens residing in Egypt and its readiness to facilitate their voluntary return once conditions in Sudan stabilise.
Water security was also a central topic in this meeting, with both sides reaffirming their shared positions as downstream states of the Nile River and emphasising the importance of upholding international law in the management of the Eastern Nile Basin.
They firmly rejected any unilateral measures that could negatively affect the shared interests of Egypt and Sudan, Khallaf noted.
In a separate meeting with Mohieddin Salem, Sudanese Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, Minister Abdel-Aati reaffirmed the strategic nature of Egyptian-Sudanese relations, Khallaf said.
He noted that the two ministers discussed mechanisms for enhancing joint co-operation at political, economic, and humanitarian levels.
In such a scope, Minister Abdel-Aati reiterated Egypt’s solidarity with Sudan and its ongoing support for national stability, unity, and institutional resilience.
Both foreign ministers underlined their unified stance on the issue of Nile water security and called for strict adherence to international legal frameworks governing transboundary watercourses. They also expressed categorical rejection of unilateral actions that threaten regional stability.
