GENEVA – Egypt’s Minister of Manpower Hassan Shehata said that President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has directed the ministry to refer the draft labor law for the Supreme Council for Social Dialogue in compliance with international standards.
President Sisi also gave directives to protect workers, particularly irregular workers, and integrating people of determination into the labor market, Shehata said during his meeting with Director-General of the International Labor Organization (ILO) Gilbert F. Houngbo on the sidelines of his participation in the 111th session of the International Labor Conference.
The meeting was attended by Egypt’s permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva Ahmed Ehab Gamal Eldin, a delegation from the Labor Ministry and the Egyptian mission in Geneva.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed boosting cooperation and coordination between the ILO and the Labor Ministry, particularly in joint projects and programs.
The minister praised the project to strengthen labor relations and its institutions in Egypt, which the ILO is implementing with the Egyptian State.
He also asserted the Egyptian State’s keenness on continuing cooperation with the ILO, the oldest UN specialized agency.
The Labor Ministry has recently launched a guide to the procedures for establishing trade union organizations, he added.
For his part, Houngbo welcomed cooperation with the Egyptian State, saying that the ILO Cairo Office is one of the most important offices in the world as it is established in 1959 in a crucial country.
He also lauded the Egyptian cabinet’s decision to change the name of the Manpower Ministry to the Labor Ministry to expand the work scope of the ministry to cover all partners involved in the production process.
