Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aati reaffirmed Egypt’s unwavering support for the United Nations (UN) and the multilateral international system.
This reaffirmation was made during a meeting on Saturday with Amina J. Mohammed, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and Chair of the UN Sustainable Development Group. The two sides discussed ways to deepen co-operation between Egypt and the UN and exchanged views on key regional and international developments.
The foreign minister asserted the need to uphold international law, strengthen political and diplomatic solutions to conflicts, and accelerate reforms to enable the UN to better respond to evolving global challenges.
Abdel-Aati praised the close partnership between Egypt and the United Nations, reaffirming Cairo’s steadfast commitment to the UN Charter and the rules-based international order.
He also commended UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed for principled leadership of the organisation and their efforts to uphold the UN Charter and confront violations of international law.
Abdel-Aati underscored the UN’s central role in maintaining international peace and security, emphasising the importance of respecting international law, international humanitarian law, and international human rights law in all conflicts. He drew particular attention to the ongoing Israeli violations in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
In the course of the meeting, the Egyptian top diplomat reviewed Egypt’s efforts to contain regional crises and reduce tensions, stressing the importance of reinvigorating multilateral co-operation, advancing political and diplomatic solutions to conflicts, and promoting international coordination to address shared global challenges.
He said such efforts are essential to boosting peace and stability and advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The meeting also addressed prospects for reforming the United Nations system to reflect changing international realities. Abdel-Aati said Egypt advocates a comprehensive vision for UN reform, including enhancing the capacity of international financial institutions and multilateral development banks to provide sustainable and concessional financing for developing countries.
For her part, the UN deputy secretary-general expressed appreciation for Egypt’s pivotal role in supporting the United Nations at both regional and international levels. She commended Egypt’s active contribution to conflict resolution and regional stability, as well as its longstanding role in UN peacekeeping and humanitarian operations.
Mohammed reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to further strengthening co-operation with Egypt across a broad range of areas.
