Egyptian Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli held a meeting on Sunday with Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat and Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources , Karim Badawi, discuss energy challenges during the summer months.
Madbouli highlighted the urgency of boosting petroleum supplies to ensure uninterrupted power, especially with summer temperatures rising.
He also emphasised rising share of new and renewable energy in Egypt’s power mix to improve efficiency and reduce operational costs.
For his part, Electricity Minister Esmat highlighted the robust infrastructure of the electricity sector, noting the significant strides in enhancing energy efficiency and implementing maintenance programs for power plants.
He also detailed plans to expand renewable energy production as part of a broader strategy to modernisethe national grid and optimize energy use in collaboration with both public and private sectors.
Up to 2,000 megawatts of renewable energy have already been added to the national grid ahead of the current summer, he said.
Esmat also discussed continuous monitoring of the national unified electricity grid’s operation to ensure stable supply and adherence to maintenance schedules. He affirmed that measures are being taken to curb technical losses and optimise fuel consumption through international-standard maintenance programmes.
Oil Minister Katim Badawi outlined efforts to secure and increase petroleum supplies for power generation, including monitoring liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments to meet domestic demand.
He stressed ongoing, round-the-clock coordination with the Ministry of Electricity to ensure a steady fuel supply for the grid, with joint committees constantly exploring fuel provision strategies.
Badawi also confirmed the petroleum sector’s measures to meet the electricity sector’s gas and diesel needs, developing proactive scenarios for increased demand during summer.
