Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Badr Abdelatty called for unified efforts to strengthen the voice of developing countries in international economic policymaking and to establish a global mechanism that supports local capacities to manage debt burdens.

Speaking at a BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting hosted by India on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, the top Egyptian diplomat stressed the need for concrete implementation tools to help developing nations meet their development goals, according to a statement by the foreign ministry.

He highlighted the critical funding gaps facing sustainable development efforts and praised the BRICS group’s role in defending multilateralism, with the UN at its core. The minister urged a shift toward a fairer, more inclusive global economy.

Abdelatty also underscored the importance of accelerating cooperation on joint projects in sectors such as energy, manufacturing, infrastructure, emerging technologies, and especially artificial intelligence. He called for expanding the use of local currencies in financial settlements in line with BRICS’ cross-border payments initiative and increasing local currency lending by the New Development Bank.

He also emphasized the need for coordinated efforts to reform the global financial and debt architecture to better reflect the needs and priorities of developing nations, and to secure more affordable financing.

On regional issues, Abdelatty condemned Israel’s continuing acts of aggression against Palestinians, holding it fully responsible for the unprecedented humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He reiterated Egypt’s categorical rejection of any plans to forcibly displace Palestinians from their homeland.

He welcomed the recent UN General Assembly resolution supporting the two-state solution and reaffirmed Egypt’s support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
