The Ministry of Health and Population participated in the annual session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) held in Vienna, Austria, from March 9 to 13.
The session was organised by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in coordination with the African Union, and brought together representatives of governments and international organisations from around the world.
During the session, the Egyptian delegation presented the country’s national experience in developing its system for treating substance use disorders and addiction.
The presentation highlighted the expansion of specialised services in line with the latest international scientific standards and the adoption of an integrated treatment model.
The model includes medical and psychological assessment, medication-based treatment, and psycho-social rehabilitation programmes to support sustainable recovery and help patients reintegrate into society.
The delegation also reviewed Egypt’s opioid substitution therapy programme, as well as a study on the use of long-acting buprenorphine injections in several hospitals to enhance treatment effectiveness, reduce relapse, and improve patient adherence.
Egypt was selected among distinguished African countries to present best practices in addiction treatment and related viral diseases, reflecting the significant progress achieved in recent years and the country’s continued commitment to strengthening international co-operation in combating drug abuse.
