Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aati received a phone call from his Portuguese counterpart Paulo Rangel on Wednesday. The two ministers discussed the dangerous regional developments and ways to reduce tensions.
Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ambassador Tamim Khalaf said Minister Abdel-Aati briefed Rangel on Egypt’s position regarding the ongoing military escalation. He stressed the urgent need for regional and international efforts to de-escalate and prioritise diplomacy and political solutions.
Abdel-Aati warned of the risks of expanding military operations, which threaten the security and stability of the entire region. He also reiterated Egypt’s condemnation of attacks on the sovereignty and security of Arab states.
Both ministers agreed that diplomacy must remain the sole path to contain the current crisis and safeguard regional peace and security.
For his part, Rangel praised Egypt’s role in calming tensions and expressed gratitude for Egypt’s assistance in evacuating Portuguese nationals stranded in the region. The two ministers stressed the importance of continued coordination and consultation in the coming period, highlighting the strong ties between Egypt and Portugal.
