CAIRO – Egyptian Minister of Environment and COP27 Envoy and Ministerial Coordinator Yasmine Fouad announced Egypt’s participation in the Global Methane Alliance.

This came during the minister’s participation in a banquet held by Senegalese Minister of Environment Abdou Karim Sall on the sidelines of the 18th session of the African Ministers of Environment Conference (AMCEN) in the Senegalese capital, Dakar, according to a statement by the Environment Ministry.

Egypt pays great attention to the role the gas and petroleum sector plays in facing climate change impacts, said Fouad, adding that irrational waste management contributes to the production of 20 percent of the volume of its emissions.

The African continent has the opportunity to contribute to addressing the global methane issue, the minister went on to say.

Egypt seeks to launch the Africa waste 50 Initiative, said the minister, noting that the initiative aims at raising the recycling rate of African waste to 50 percent by 2050 by uniting local, regional and global efforts and experiences, and creating an unprecedented collaborative effort in Africa.

The minister, meanwhile, urged the international community to participate in the initiative, which is part of efforts to reduce methane emissions.

The initiative will be launched officially during the 2022 UN Climate Change Conference, COP27, due to convene in Sharm El Sheikh city in November, added the minister.
