Egypt’s Mufti Dr Shawqi Allam has condemned in the strongest terms the burning of a copy of the Holy Quran by some extremists in Denmark.
Such heinous crimes and irresponsible abuses foment hatred and tensions, Allam said in a statement Tuesday, adding that they reflect abominable manifestations of Islamophobia.
He urged the world community to intervene to counter such abuses that aim to spread hatred.
Such repeated abuses constitute a candid insult and challenge to the sentiments of over 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide, the mufti noted.
They are meant to increase the gap among cultures and civilizations and augment hatred among the different peoples and followers of the different faiths, Allam added.
He renewed calls for issuing an international law that prohibits the defamation of religions, prophets, sanctuaries and religious figures, stressing this would help maintain world peace.
