The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs is closely monitoring the tragic incident involving the sinking of a vessel off the coast of Tobruk, Libya, which was carrying a number of Egyptian nationals.
Upon receiving initial reports of the incident, the Egyptian Consulate General in Benghazi promptly dispatched a delegation to Tobruk, and coordinated with the relevant Libyan authorities to determine the fate of those onboard and to provide support to affected individuals.
As a result of these coordinated efforts, several victims have been identified, the ministry said in a statement appeared on its Facebook page.
It added that the necessary procedures were taken to transfer their remains to Egypt through the land border crossing, following verification by their families, noting that the Consulate continues to work closely with Libyan counterparts to facilitate the identification and repatriation of additional victims.
Simultaneously, the Consulate is providing support to the survivors and is preparing for their return to Egypt as soon as official investigations conclude.
The ministry remains in constant contact with the Consulate General in Benghazi to ensure the completion of all procedures concerning the deceased and to expedite the repatriation of survivors, the statement read.
It noted that the ministry once again urges all Egyptians to avoid illegal migration routes due to the grave dangers they pose, including the risk of exploitation by human trafficking networks.
“The Government of Egypt remains dedicated to expanding safe, legal pathways for migration by enhancing vocational training and employment opportunities and through agreements with partner countries on regulated migration channels,” the statement further read.
In conclusion, the ministry extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims, praying for God’s mercy upon the deceased and strength for their loved ones during this difficult time.
