Egypt is marking the World Wildlife Day via social media.
This year’s theme is ‘Forests and Livelihoods: Sustaining People and Planet’ to since millions of people including indigenous communities worldwide depend on forested and areas adjacent to forest areas for their livelihood and survival.
Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad described World Wildlife Day as “a real opportunity to celebrate the diversity and enrichment of wildlife, including animals and plants, highlighting their importance for humans”.
This event increases awareness of the value of wildlife and how it benefits the planet, and more effort is needed to maintain its sustainability, the minister said.
The UN said this day celebrates forest-based livelihoods and seeks to promote forest and forest wildlife management practices that accommodate both human well-being and the long-term conservation of forests, while promoting the value of traditional practices that contribute to establishing a more sustainable relationship with these crucial natural systems.
