Egypt’s National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) launched an awareness campaign to mark World Down Syndrome Day, an annual global event recognized by the UN General Assembly on March 21.
The day aims to promote the rights, inclusion, and well-being of people with Down syndrome, while raising public awareness and understanding.
In a statement on Saturday, the council highlighted key messages, including defining the condition as one of the most common genetic disorders, caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21. It is associated with distinct physical traits such as low muscle tone, shorter stature, and characteristic facial features, alongside varying degrees of intellectual disability affecting learning and adaptive skills.
The council warned that individuals with Down syndrome may face social isolation and bullying, noting that loneliness is particularly widespread and painful among people with intellectual disabilities.
This year’s theme, “Together Against Loneliness”, underscores the importance of providing support to help individuals build and maintain relationships, with true inclusion seen as the solution.
The NCPD’s General Supervisor, Eman Karim, said the theme offers an opportunity to renew commitment to inclusion, stressing the council’s role in promoting awareness and fostering a culture of shared responsibility to achieve full integration and sustainable impact.
Karim added that co-operation with government and private partners is essential to advancing empowerment goals, in line with the national strategy for persons with disabilities.
