Egyptian Ministry of Planning and Economic Development reviewed on Sunday Egypt’s position in the Sustainable Development Report 2022.
The University of Cambridge publishes the sustainable development report on an annual basis, in co-operation with the German Bertelsmann Stiftung Foundation, and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network.
The 2022 report introduces data about countries’ performance for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. It highlights areas that require faster progress.
Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Hala el-Saeed, said Egypt obtains a score of 68.7 in the 2022 report.
This means that, she said, Egypt was able to maintain its performance in the index, even as the regional average decreased from 67.1 in the 2021 report to 66.7 in the 2022 report.
The minister noted that Egypt ranks 87th out of 163 countries included in the 2022 report.
Egypt, the minister said, also ranks 7th at the level of the Arab region and 4th at the level of Africa.
She added that 20 Arab countries and 47 African countries are covered by the report this year.
The minister added that Egypt also comes in position no. 15, out of 20 emerging markets included in the 2022 report.
She said Egypt made data available for a sufficient number of indicators, which helped the report’s authors to measure the Arab country’s performance as far as the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals is concerned.
The same data, she said, helped them evaluate the goals’ achievement trends, including goal no. 10, namely reducing inequalities, and goal no. 12, namely responsible consumption and production.
The minister noted that these trends were not covered in last year’s report.
She referred to an improvement in the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals in the 2022 report, compared to 2021, especially with respect to goals no. 1, 5, 9, 10, 12, 13, and 15.
Egypt ranks 30th out of 163 countries covered by the report as far as the Global Outreach Impact Index is concerned.
This indicator measures the positive and negative cross-border effects from one country to another.
These effects usually affect the ability of countries to achieve the sustainable development goals at the environmental, social and security levels.
In 2021, Egypt ranked 36 out of 165 countries in the same index.
Egypt’s score in this index this year rose to 98.82 out of 100.
The 2022 report also refers to Egypt’s performance in the areas of education, gender and equality, health and well-being, decarbonisation of energy and sustainable industry, sustainability of food, land, water and oceans, sustainable cities and societies, and the digital revolution for sustainable development.
It refers to Egypt’s superiority in education, research and development indicators, as well as in health, well-being and demography indicators, over the average performance of countries in the Middle East and North Africa, and lower middle income countries.
