Egypt’s Minister of Local Development and Environment Manal Awad, Minister of Higher Education Abdelaziz Konsowa, Minister of Planning Ahmed Rostom, and Head of the National Council for Women Amal Ammar, launched on Monday the fourth phase of the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects.
The initiative is being carried out under patronage of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, and closely followed up by Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli.
The new phase builds on previous successes and reflects Egypt’s commitment to supporting climate action and sustainable development at the local level.
The launch event was attended by governors via video conference, along with the UN Special Envoy on Financing for the Development and Head of the National Arbitration Committee for the Initiative, Mahmoud Mohieldin, and officials from various ministries.
The initiative is a key tool in supporting the transition to a green economy by encouraging innovation and empowering youth, women, and the private secto, Awad said.
The new phase will focus on the quality and feasibility of projects, as well as maximising their economic and social impact, she added.
Application for the initiative will open on April 15, alongside awareness campaigns across governorates.
For his part, Minister Rostom noted that the initiative has become a model for national co-operation, with 4,859 projects qualifying and 54 winning in previous phases, in addition to training 11,500 participants through 130 sessions.
Minister Konsowa highlighted the role of universities in supporting innovation, linking research to community needs, and helping implement winning projects through innovation clusters.
