Egypt has taken a strategic step toward sustainable aviation with the launch of its first national feasibility study for the production and use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), in line with international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The initiative was inaugurated by Civil Aviation Minister Sameh Hefny during a two-day workshop held at the ministry’s headquarters, organized in cooperation with ICAO and supported by the European Union under the ACT-SAF program.
The workshop brought together representatives from government bodies, international organizations, and the private sector, reflecting Egypt’s commitment to advancing green aviation and positioning itself as a regional hub for sustainable air transport. Hefny emphasized that the project demonstrates Egypt’s growing role within ICAO and highlights international confidence in the country’s ability to lead future-oriented aviation initiatives.
The study aims to provide the scientific and economic foundation for a national roadmap to produce and use SAF, supporting Egypt’s 2030 Vision and its targets for reducing carbon emissions. Hefny noted that Egypt’s geographic location, expanding renewable energy projects, and upgraded aviation infrastructure make it well-placed to become a regional center for SAF production.
The workshop also showcased Egypt’s environmental achievements, including awards for Cairo and Hurghada airports from the Airports Council International for sustainability initiatives. ICAO experts, supported by the EU, will continue working in Egypt for ten days to finalize the feasibility study and prepare a national roadmap for SAF adoption.
