Minister of Health and Population, Dr Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar, has reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to strengthening health co-operation with Kenya and supporting the development of its healthcare system.
During a bilateral meeting with his Kenyan counterpart, Dr Aden Barry Duale, held on the sidelines of the World Health Summit in Nairobi on Monday, the minister emphasised the importance of accelerating the finalisation and signing of pending memoranda of understanding to establish a comprehensive strategic partnership between both countries in the fields of healthcare and pharmaceuticals.
He also highlighted Egypt’s readiness to transfer its successful experience in combating Hepatitis C and advancing cancer treatment protocols, in addition to supporting Kenya’s efforts toward achieving universal health coverage.
According to Health Ministr Spokesman Dr Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar, the discussions addressed mechanisms for enhancing co-operation in human resource development and facilitating pharmaceutical registration and technology transfer, with the aim of positioning Kenya as a regional hub for Egyptian pharmaceutical products in East Africa.
The two sides also reviewed final arrangements for two strategic memoranda of understanding. The first covers comprehensive co-operation in the health sector, while the second establishes a medical partnership between Egypt’s Nasser Institute and Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH).
This partnership seeks to establish the first bone marrow transplant unit in Kenya, expand telemedicine services, and enhance collaboration in early detection programmes for breast, colorectal, and pediatric cancers.
Both ministers commended the role of the Coptic Hospital in Nairobi as a model of successful Egyptian health diplomacy, noting its contribution to delivering high-quality medical services with continued support from Egyptian medical teams.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides agreed to form joint technical committees to expedite the registration of pharmaceutical products and encourage Egyptian private sector participation in Kenya’s healthcare sector, including hospital management, healthcare infrastructure, and diagnostic centers.
